Faces Behind Our Community: Lara

Gone to the store recently?

by Tracy (Intern)

I was lucky enough to conduct our second “Faces Behind Our Community” interview with Lara Foreman. Lara works as a Retail Human Resources Manager (we can’t say which one but take a guess).  She is one of the many faces behind-the-scenes of our regular trips to the grocery store or drugstore, whose contribution often goes unnoticed. Here at Faces Apparel, these are the people we want to showcase as we remember the people behind our products and services. Let’s get to know Lara a little better. Here’s what she has to say:

On Work…

I finished undergrad as an International Studies major right when the recession hit. At first, I didn’t really know where to go or what to do. I had a few odd jobs and wasn’t always in HR, I ran a few different departments before I ended up here. Now, I feel my personal strengths really fit to what HR is about.

On personal strengths…

A good HR manager has to be good with people and all different personalities at that. I am a very collaborative person, I love working with other people. I’m outgoing, but also adaptable to different personalities to make everyone feel comfortable.

On causes & passion…

I think I am just overall a very passionate person, I am passionate about life. My grandmother has Alzheimer’s disease and I just did a walk for Alzheimer’s Association. I like to do runs and half marathons with causes that I believe in. I started my own team for Alzheimer’s Association, and it’s great to find people to donate and also walk/run with us. I also run with the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. I just think cancer is something we are all susceptible to. I knew someone when I was younger who passed away from cancer, and I figured I would run for them.

On role models…

My mom came from Korea all by herself, leaving everything she knew to be with my dad. It takes so much strength to leave the language you know, your family, your life, and go somewhere else to make your home. But she still managed to have three kids, get her Bachelors Degree and become a financial adviser. Her whole family is still in Korea but my mom just inspires me to remember that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

On personal achievements…

I’ve come to the point where I can finally sustain myself. I live by myself and I am so proud of that. When you are younger, you don’t fully understand what it means to be self-sustaining. It seems easier than it really is, but to get to where I am now took a lot of focus, responsibility and financial saving/planning. In less than four years I paid off my undergraduate student loans completely!

On life…

I consider myself to be someone who lives life to the fullest. We’ve been blessed with our lives; where we come from, the experiences we have, the opportunities we are given. So I just want to encourage others to explore. Go see random new things, make new experiences, because you have to live to the fullest. I just try to smile at everyone, help anyone I can, and challenge myself in every way.

It was wonderful chatting with Lara and hearing her story. I admire her unyielding optimism and the kind of life she has pursued. Next time you make a trip to the store, we encourage you to take a moment to think about all those people behind the scenes, like Lara, and their unique stories.
